Prunes Improve HDL “Good” Cholesterol, May Benefit Heart Health

Eating prunes regularly may help raise HDL “good” cholesterol levels and benefit overall cardiovascular health, some new research has found. Prune consumption also decreased oxidative stress and an inflammatory marker known as C-reactive protein (CRP).

This research follows previous studies showing that daily prune consumption could promote better gut health, bone health, and weight management. It consisted of two separate studies: one in men aged 55 and older and one in postmenopausal women.

In the men’s study, long-term prune intake improved both overall HDL cholesterol levels and the total cholesterol to HDL ratio. On the women’s side, prune consumption was found to have no negative effects on metabolic measures like fasting glucose and insulin levels, in spite of a somewhat high– though natural– sugar content.

“It is exciting to see research on prune consumption and cardiovascular health expand,” said Andrea N. Giancoli, MPH, RDN, Nutrition Advisor. “While all fruits and vegetables provide essential nutrients, prunes make for an easy, convenient and versatile snack or recipe ingredient that…can help support consumers’ cardiovascular health goals.”

Infertility Treatments Linked to Higher Risk of Stroke After Pregnancy

Common infertility treatments may increase the risk of stroke-related hospitalization within 12 months of giving birth, a recent study has found. Overall, those who underwent infertility treatment had a 66% higher risk of stroke hospitalization compared with those who had “spontaneous conception.”

Currently, strokes account for about 7% of pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S., and the use of infertility treatments is increasing as new advancements in technology continue to be made. Previous studies have already shown potential adverse effects of these treatments, including a higher risk of gestational diabetes.

The most recent study involved an analysis of over 31,000,000 patients who delivered a baby between 2010-2018. Any hospitalizations for a stroke were recorded for those who conceived spontaneously and for those who used an infertility treatment– assisted reproductive technology, intrauterine insemination, etc.

While stroke risk was still relatively low for all patients, it was significantly higher for those who underwent infertility treatment, especially in the case of hemorrhagic stroke. The study authors recommend better screening and follow-ups postpartum for those who utilize these treatments.

5 Natural Ways to Keep Your Gallbladder Healthy

Most people don’t think about their gallbladder until something goes wrong, but it plays a very important role in helping your body to properly digest fats. To avoid a problem down the road, help your gallbladder out by eating regular meals, exercising consistently, and maintaining a healthy weight without drastic diets. Avoid so-called “gallbladder cleanses” and instead focus on eating foods like plant-based proteins, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and plenty of water. (More)

Important Sex-Specific Signs of Cardiac Arrest to Know About

Cardiac arrest– which is different from a heart attack– has a mortality rate of over 90%. It occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating, which means blood stops being pumped throughout the body. Only about 50% of people have symptoms before a cardiac arrest, but identifying them can be key to getting help. For men, the most common warning symptom is chest pain, while for women it’s shortness of breath. Either symptom, regardless of sex, signals an emergency and sometimes occurs alongside palpitations, excessive sweating, or lightheadedness. (More)

‘Extreme’ Dietary Habits Could Lower Your Life Expectancy

A recent study has found that going to extremes with carbohydrates or fats in your diet could actually increase mortality risk. For men, a low carbohydrate intake or a fat intake of over 35% of total energy lowered life expectancy. In women, high carbohydrate consumption was the most detrimental, but a higher fat intake did not seem to have negative effects. Overall, the researchers emphasize that a balanced diet is usually the healthiest. (More)

Some Antibiotics Do Promote Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria in the Gut

Antibiotic resistance has become an ever increasing problem, and the overuse of antibiotics is often highlighted as a main contributing factor. Broad-spectrum antibiotics known as carbapenems have been identified as particularly harmful because they kill beneficial bacteria that would normally inhibit pathogenic bacteria (specifically Enterobacteriaceae) and also reduce the levels of metabolites that fight pathogenic bacteria. How Bitter Foods Boost Your Digestion, Plus Top 13 to Try

Foods with some bitterness to them may not be the most popular choice (coffee excepted!), but they are fantastic for your digestion. Their bitter flavor stimulates saliva and bile flow, which both help the digestive process to go smoothly and effectively. Some top gut-boosting choices include kale, arugula, radicchio, and broccoli rabe. Dandelion greens are also excellent when in season, or you can try grapefruit, cacao (the raw version), cranberries, and, yes, coffee. (More)
